This is another project where there is a ton of data but not much of it is really useful. I pulled 9 of the 18 data tables available from CMS. I had big plans to create a very robust visual but the KISS method won the day.
This visualization is simple but it gives a great idea where the facility can focus on improvement by seeing their deficiency tags in a clear way. The overall rating score is conditionally formatted on a scale of 0 to 5 which really draws attention to the current status of the facility. Likewise, the average number of patients and number of certified beds gives a brief glimpse in how the facility is doing based on census levels.
A deeper dive into CMS quality measures and other metrics would require data on the facility/patient level. I’ve searched for a de-identified or sample nursing home patient dataset, but haven’t found one yet.
